Ubuntu 10.04 server as Domain controller with Windows 7 clients

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 as a server. I would like to turn it into my DC and have my windows machines as client and have the users be able to logon to any machine on my network and be able to access their files. Can anyone please help me out. Thanks

Hello tlbrown20104, welcom to LQ,

what about your experience with Windows-domains? have you ever worked with a Windows-domaincontroller?

In general you can use a Linux-computer as a DC with Samba 4. And the Windows-clients must have the "professional"-version installed, "Home-edition" will not work.

If you need more help, please describe in more detail what you want to achieve and please tell us more about your experience.

I've never done this with samba but I am a Windows sysadmin and work with DCs in my job.

There are several manuals about this subject in the internet, even one from Microsoft. Here a manual from the Gentoo-wiki http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Samba...rectory_Server they document very well. Here the Samba-wiki https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Sam...domain_as_a_DC and here the article from Microsoft http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/m....12.linux.aspx

Hope that helps. But be aware that it isn't easy and requires a broad knowledge of both Linux and Windows.

Markus
