Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop installation stalls
Hi,
I've downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 from the UK mirror of the Ubuntu site. When I try to install the OS from the CD it stalls at various different places. I have been able to get it to a max of 25% of installation before stalling, but more often than not it stalls when I'm trying to choose the keyboard type, or when I'm trying to setup my username / PC hostname. I've carried out an md5sum on the iso and it shows no errors. I've downloaded the iso a second time and carried out the same check, and similarly no errors. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Might be a hardware related problem, at a guess, maybe the CD Drive is on its way out? What kind of computer do you have, hardware specs? What program did you use to burn the CD image?
|
You might wanna go with the Alternate Install CD instead.
|
Sorry, I should've mentioned that I hav a Compaq Presario R3000. I don't believe there's anything wrong with the CDROM per se, I've never had any issues with it previously.
|
Are you burning on the same computer you are installing on? If not, are you doing the md5sum on the target computer? I believe it's possible, albeit somewhat rare, for a CD burner to produce a disk it can read, but another drive cannot.

It sounds like you something is giving in your pc. If you have a spare flash drive try doing an install from a flash drive or If you can try getting another DVD rom. I say this because a few years back I kept getting install errors and it turned out to be a cd rom issue.
Course a good way to disprove that would be to try an earlier version of Ubuntu like 9.10 or maybe even another distro and see what happens. Just a few suggestions. |
Thanks all, much appreciate your comments. I noticed in another post that they had set the "noapic" setting during installation. I tried that and it appeared to work for some reason.
The issue I have now however is that the actual OS appears to freeze during usage. Surely this is nothing to do with the CDROM at this stage as it's running off the hard disk. For example, I was trying to look to setup wireless networking and it would always freeze. A reboot was invariably necessary. Any thoughts as to why this would be? Thanks as always. |
Same apic issue? I think the setting you passed at install may not have been kept on the installed system.
|
How do I set that again now that I'm not using the liveCD installation? Also, I read somewhere that it's dangerous to run without that setting for too long as it affect the heating/cooling. Thanks.
|
I'm not sure how you set it on an installed system, sorry.
There are two different things with similar names. APIC stands for Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller, and is what can cause issues with some hardware/software combinations. ACPI stands for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface, and handles things like power saving and fan speeds; it has created issues in the past but I think usually works fine now. |

Sorry just realised you are running 10.04. edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg and look for Code:
menuentry "Ubuntu, linux 2.6.28-13-generic" { |
Just to be clear, should that be apci=off or apic=off? Thanks.
|
apci is nothing. It should probably be what you used originally, which I think was apic.
|
Unfortunately still hangs during usage. There was another suggestion in a different thread to use noapic instead of apic=off. That doesn't work either. Any other suggestions? Thanks.
