two Red Hat OSs listed at boot screen
 

I just installed Red Hat WS and downloaded the updates via the Red Hat network updater tool included with the OS. Since doing so, I have noticed that there are two Linux OSs listed at the boot screen (along with my Windows OS, as it is a dual-boot machine). The two entries are as follows:

RED HAT ENT LINUX WS (2.4.21-15.0.3.EL)
RED HAT ENT LINUX WS (2.4.21-4.EL)

Is it normal to see this after an update? I have been choosing the first selection to boot into, with obvious no problems.

Yep - the newer entry is because you have updated your kernel. RH does this so that you can test the new kernel, once you are happy, comment out the lines in your lilo.conf or grub.lst (?) file. If you are not happy, you can revert to your old kernel.

I have seen this happen in Windows 2k, sometimes when new OS installs go badly. I like the control Linux gives me in this case.

did XXX.. the original poster every figure out the solution to his problem? was it switchung runtime levels, editing config, running sax2. If you figured it out, please share.

I have not yet corrected this. Whenever the OS choices appear at boot time, I simply choose the atest kernel. Because ii works, I have not attempted the suggestions of the other posters, but I plan to after I finish learning Samba, NFS, and the several other parts of Linux I've become preoccupied with :) I just got an alert to upgrade to yet another kernel, so perhaps I will fix this subsequent to doing so. I think it involves commenting out the lines in the grub.lst file, as suggested.
