Question Two HDD XP & Slackware 12 Dual Boot

Hi People

I have been doing some searching on the web and on this forum for some examples of how to setup a Dual Boot solution when you are using seperate HDD for each OS.

I have Win XP Pro Loaded on a 20Gb WD HDD and Slackware loaded on a 200Gb Hdd (I know a little backwards but I figure it leaves room to move later on when I leave M$ behind).

Could someone please help or point me in the right direction as all dual boot threads I have seen relate to same HDD seperate partitions.

Sorry in advance if this has been covered already else where.

Regards
Al

Have you got a problem booting or something? If so, you need to tell us what it is. Usually, installing Linux on a different disk makes no difference. LILO should automatically find Windows and add an entry to the config file. You'll want LILO installed on the MBR of your first disk, too. When you installed Slack, it should have given you an option of where to install LILO.

Sounded Clear in my head Sorry

Hi Thanks for the response, indeed I do have a problem with the booting sequence.

When I installed Slackware I had removed the windows HDD, I then re intstalled the MS OS and rebooted.

MS booted without LILO presenting itself. I assume that as I installed LILO initally without XP installed that LILO is not aware of the second OS.

Could you please advise on what config the HDD need to be if any IE same IDE Channel or Different and does Master or Slave make a difference in this area?

Last of all how and what do I need to add to LILO if anything?

Sorry again for the shortage of information in the first post.

WOW, almost the same thing as me, except i have hardware failures damn thing. For sure its difficult to edit a windos boot loader so the simplest thing is good oldy linux, as your using lilo it won't be quite the same but you still require your HD with Linux to be the primary IDE master drive and the windos HD as Secondary IDE slave drive, it will make no difference if they are in the same IDE channel just make sure you plug in the primary master drive on the end of the IDE cable and set it to master and then plug in the wondows drive to the socket in the middle if the IDE cable and set to slave, if using the same cable. This will mean when the system boots it will boot your linux drive first and linux will boot up at least then you'll be able to play with the settings to get Lilo to also notice your slave windos HD

I hope this helps
