Red face Twinview...

Hi.
Lilith here,

I'm somewhat fresh to Linux, but I'm fast with computers, and have decent luck with Linux. Anyway, my latest project in Linux is trying to get Twinview to work. Specs:
AMD Duron 800mhz., 256Mb. RAM, 16Mb. PCI Nvidia Riva TNT, 64Mb. AGP Nvidia Geforce 2, Redhat 8.0/Windows XP Dual-boot.

I can't seem to get Linux to even show me that the second display (which is on the TNT) is there at all. Here's my XF86Config

right, your problem is that you do not want twinview. twinview is a feature of NVidia cards with multiple outputs. see what you want is a dual head setup, which is not related to twinview unless that's the card you have, which you don't.

you've not actually got anything set up there for the other card, you need two Monitor sections, two Device sections and a ServerLayout that uses both cards...

look at my configuration: http://thirtythreeandathird.net/dualhead and you should be able to build your own set up easily enough. xf86config should be able to generate two setups, one for each card, which you can then hack together yourself, if xf86config can't do it itself... i don't believe it can, but i've always done it by hand anyway

and in future it'd be handy if you cut out all the comments, it makes reading the file a lot easier...

Ahhhhh...thank you very much. I'll get on that XF86Config hack and slash job right away. Oh, and many apologies about the comments, I was in a major hurry and didn't have time to cut them out. Next time, I will make sure to do so...maybe I'll actually organize my time so that I HAVE time to do things...or not...

As Acid said, you probably want dual head, not twin view. Just in case you have a NVIDIA card with two outputs, here's my config.
http://www.geocities.com/nskl86/XF-TwinView.txt
And i beleive Acid_kewpie doesn't use xinerama, which you might want to enable, some people love it, some hate it, so i suggest you read a bit about it as well.

Ok, I've followed your instructions and built a XF86Config by looking at yours and looking at my system info. Question 1: Why do you have a Device called "Generic VGA"? Is that neccessary, or do you just have some other reason for it being there. Question 2: What exactly have I done wrong here...

erm.. you have "Screen 1 "......." in the server layout, you don't want the numbers. adn erm... that generic one is just there for the sake f it. no benefit. you ask what you've done wrong, but you've not said what errors you get...

Oh, sorry...erm, I get the classic "no screens found" error when it tries to load X. I'll try and fix that 1 and 0 thing (XF86Configure put that in on the first one, so I thought I'd try it with the second one) and see if it works.
