How do I change the number of konsoles I have? I want 3 konsoles and an X desktop. Of course, if there's a HOWTO (and I think there is), show it to me.
See at /etc/inittab. You'll find the lines:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty ....
....
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty....
Each line is for one console. Just delete (or '#') unwanted ones.
Dorian knew what I was talking about. I call the command prompts of Linux a "konsole" because I started using it under X, then found about the F1-Fx trick. I just want TTY1, TTY2, TTY3, and an X desktop, IE 3 konsoles and an X desktop. I think Dorian's move will work, and I am about to try it.
I'm needing to set up X over, as I had to move my hard disk after install (but that's besde the point here). I'll handle that later. As far as throttling it, what's that?

I simply meant, that you can create new X sessions from <F8> trough <F12> with the command I used above ... thus you have to limit (throttle) the amount of X sessions too, even though dorian33 gave no receipt how to do that -- and I don't know either how.
Btw. if you use startx -- :2 & (ampersand added, numbers increasing to 6) you can do all that from a single TTY, i.e. you still have access to six virtual terminals.
Hello I have a reletive question here: I use "motor" as an IDE for the programming. But it needs a free tty to start debug. When login as user, I always got "no free tty". JZL240I-U would you tell me how I can have a *free* tty for debugging? Many thanks to you. I am exactly a Newbie.

I don't know "motor", so I can only guess. Now, dorian33 wrote earlier in this thread:

So, look at your /etc/inittab. Does it have enough lines, i.e. TTYs for your problem?
What happens, when you type <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F2>, do you get a new console then? What distribution do you use? (Suggestion: use the user-panel to enter at least some technical data there, they are displayed below your handle on the left column in the fora and help to better answer your questions).
Thank you very much JZL240I-U. I am using RH9. Indeed I have new console when pressing <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F2>. Strange thing is I do not have this problem when in root. (can debug in motor). Maybe it is better for me to ask the author.
Thanks again.
Is there any way to move a X-terminal over to, maybe, Ctrl-Allt-F4? I would like to do that so I don't have to fumble in the dark looking for that F7 button.
