TV will not connect to laptop using HDMI cable.
I am using a Lenovo Z560 laptop with a Vizio VOJ320F1A TV. I tested the HDMI cable on my sons PC and it works. When I try and play a movie from the laptop to the TV I get a blue screen on the TV that says no signal. The laptop "sees" the TV but when I tell it to find the display it does not find any resolution/frequency that will work. I think the laptop has an Intel GMA graphics card but I am not sure about it. I ran the command LSHW and it tells me that I have an intergrated graphic controller and that the vendor is Intel. I went to Intel to look for a newer driver but they suggested that I go to the Linux distributer. I am running Ubuntu 11.10. Is there anyway to make sure that I have the correct driver?

With the TV plugged in, bring up a terminal and run the command 'xrandr'. Then show us the output.

Does it work properly if you run 'xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto' ?

Running the xrandr auto command gave me a splash of color on the screen. I have an appointment to get to so I will let you know more when I get a chance to test it more. Thank you for your help.

Get Ubuntu color splash on tv
I am getting the Ubuntu color splash on the tv now. It looks like a blank desktop with no icons. I am playing a movie on the laptop but it doesn't show on the tv. I tried mirroring the display but it didn't make any difference. The display settings now show the tv as being 1024 x 768 which is a 4 : 3 ratio. I think my tv is 16 : 9 but it still fills the screen. Changing the display setting under display settings did not make a difference. Thanks again for getting me this far.

No Sound over HDMI
I got the video working by mirroring the laptop display. Is there a way to use both display independently? I have no sound coming out on the tv. Any ideas how to get sound to play over HDMI? Thank you.

You can place the monitor to the right or left with the --right-of or --left-of options in xrandr.

I know nothing about HDMI audio.
