Tux Racer Wont Open

I am running Mandrake 10.0. When I installed mandrake a bunch of RPMs were courupt (a bunch were) and tuxracer was one of them. So I downloaded the RPM from http://rpm.pbone.net/ and installed it. Its on the menu and everything but when I go to open it, it goes to the menu bar and says starting Tuxracer for a minute then just closes and does not do anything.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks
Joseph

arghhh, no tuxracer!!!??

have you tried starting it from a console - you'll often get some messages which might indicate where to start looking for solutions. give it a go and post back..

graphics?

you need hardware acceleration to play tuxracer. To do this you need a video driver. Have you installed one? If not go to www.nvidia.com or www.ati.com (depending on card chipset) and download/install latest driver. Then edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file to read 'nvidia' beside driver in the video section (if you have an nvidia card). I have never used an ATI card so i dont know how but just refer to the man pages or readmes that accompany the driver.

true, but even without, the game should at least start - this was the case before i installed the correct nvidia driver for my graphics card. tux would start, but run dreadfully slowly.

Try running the command "3Ddiag". This runs disgnostics on the 3D system.

TuxRacer needs the SDL library to run. Maby this rpm was corrupted as well?

If you can't get any 3D apps to run, try installing Mesa or GLUT. These provide software emulation for 3D, and so we can at least find out if the problem lies with the game or with the graphics drivers.

I tried to run '3Ddiag' but it said command not found. I went into the avalible software thing to search what SDL packages were avalible but I am unsure what one it would be.

Although 3Ddiag is written by SuSe, I've checked it's file list and there doesn't seem to be anything that will stop it working with Mandrake, so I'd suggest heading over to RPMfind and trying to install a copy. It is very useful in getting 3D cards to work.

Here is are my SDL RPMs:

oliver@linux:~> su
Password:
linux:/home/oliver # rpm -qa >> rpms
linux:/home/oliver # exit
oliver@linux:~> grep -i sdl rpms
SDL_mixer-1.2.5-90
SDL-1.2.5-259
SDL_ttf-2.0.6-105
SDL_image-1.2.3-105

Did you manage to get 3Ddiag working? What does it say? The SDL stuff was just my random guess, but 3Ddiag will tell you what the problem is.

You might also want to search in the Mandrake distro forum and see if anyone's had trouble using NVidia drivers with Mandrake in the past.
