Since the other thread is on LQ, it's not really useful starting a new thread top point to that one ...
Next time you don't want to forget the location of something, either add it to your subscribed threads (click Thread Tools>Subscribe to this Thread) or simply bookmark it in your browser or even in your user profile ;)

Thanks for the advice.

Please know that I am very sensitive to the need to avoid redundancy.

I did it this way for two reasons:

1. There are a lot of posts that come up where this tutorial is useful
2. I could not find the link when I was replying to someone's question

Here's a suggestion for LQ: Is there somewhere and index of favorite tutorials? Not FAQs, but links to thing like this one that will be universally useful.

Another thing that periodically comes to mind: When someone starts a thread, hwy not prompt them to enter where they have looked. Don't require a response to allow them to post---but just have this gentle reminder. It could be simply a couple of check boxes---eg yes, I checked Google, yes I did an LQ search---etc.

I'm afraid the check-boxes wouldn't work. people would simply check them off and post their questions anyway.

In the right margin, in a box labeled Main Menu there's an entry to Linux Links which is exactly what you describe.

And I suggest you just search our Tutorial section.

Posting references to others posts makes no sense.

Cheers,
Tink

What???? All the time, I see people posting links--including links to stuff in LQ. I have seen it as helpful.

Granted, we wish people were doing their own searching---but they don't always do that--especially those just off the turnip truck.

Posting a link is somehow more satisfying than simply telling someone: "It's there--YOU find it." In this case, I SEARCHED LQ to find to original dd post--no luck. Only when I searched on the author did I find it.

linmix 12-13-2005 03:56 PM

Tinksters post may be a bit curt, but in essence I have to agree: the thread you link to has a very clear title and your post is simply an empty shell... I understand why you did it, but there are other means as I pointed out before.

If the link had been from outside the forum it might make a little more sense, but even so it would be better placed under the LQ bookmarks "Linux Links"

If someone had asked the question and your post had
been a response, sure, point him there.

But to keep a thread you find interesting high in
numbers or easy for you to find by posting a reference
to it for that very purpose makes no sense in terms of
the board. You might want to put it in your social bookmarks.

Think again.

Cheers,
Tink
