Turning on context texture Rendering

Hi there all

I have downloaded flightgear and wish to run it on my linux machine.
Specs are: AMD64 Phenom Processor, 4 Gig Ram, ATI Radeon 3450 graphics card, 22" acer monitor.

When I run flightgear in a shell, I get this:
Code:

glenn@glenn-acer:~$ fgfs
freeglut (fgfs): Unable to create direct context rendering for window 'FlightGear'
This may hurt performance.
  Model Author:  Unknown
  Creation Date: 2002-01-01
  Version:      $Id: c172p.xml,v 1.18 2007-01-15 12:50:45 ehofman Exp $
  Description:  Cessna C-172
Segmentation fault
glenn@glenn-acer:~$

And when I try and diagnose the problem using glxinfo:
Code:

glenn@glenn-acer:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)

When I test using glsgears, I get this:

I have tried installing the restricted driver for my ATI Radeon graphics card, but along with a thick black band at the bottom of my display, Flightgear's GUI flickers on and off and on again several times a second.

Is anyone out there able to help?

Glenn.
