tty(x) troubles

I have a question that I hope someone can figure out.

At my school, (Bellingham Technical College) we are taking a Linux+ class this quater.

everything has been running fine, except when we want to switch to another (terminal?) like tty2 or tty4, all we get is a blank screen.

Even though you can't see anything, you can still login, and then if you go back to the graphical screen, and use the "w" command, you can see that you have logged in.

I am not sure if this is a hardware issue, or something else.

We are all running Fedora Core 4.

thanks in advanced!

:::Edit: Our Instructor's computer works. he has a video projector plugged is as well.
About 80% of us installed off of the same DVD image.
