Trying to upgrade from SUSE 9 to SUSE 11.
Trying to upgrade my installed SUSE 9 version to version 11 but am having trouble. Do I need to delete the earlier version first and do a clean install?

Back up anything in /home that you want to keep (for safety's sake) then do a clean install. There is no need to delete the existing installation. During the installation you will have the opportunity to reformat the partition.

If you don't have dedicated partition for /home, I would recommend backing up /home, and reinstalling. Make sure you create a partition for home. In the future, this will allow you to simple rename your old /home/<user> directory, and reinstall without reformatting the /home partition.

I wouldn't recommend an upgrade. A lot has changed from 9.0 to the present. SuSE used KDE4 now. PackageKit, PolicyKit, Pulse Audio & NetworkManager were introduced. So much will have to be replaced, upgrading successfully practically amount to a reinstall anyway.

Needed more memory on my old P2 box

I was trying to upgrade my old P2 processor machine from version 9 to 11. Did nto realize that there was only 96MB of memory in the box... Guess I better add more and try again...
