Trying to update kernel


i ahve a fresh install of suse 9.0 with the 2.4.21 kernel. I need ot install a new kerenel, the 2.6.12. I tried doing so with the 2.6.12 rpm for a i686. I run the rpm usin rpm -Uhv --nodeps --force <filename>.

It ram and saip preparing ................................................. kernel
and then it stopped, so i rebooted like the instructions i have tell me to and it says can't find /boot/something/vmlinuz. I've reinstalled suse. What did i do wrong?

Did you edit your bootloader so it knows where to find the new kernel?

i have GRUB and the instructions said i didn't need to
