Question Trying to stop Xwindows from immediately starting

Hello All,

I'm pretty new at using linux and I need help reconfiguring the startup for Linux YellowDog.

I setup the PC to automatically startup xwindows and I have to change this somehow. I want linux to start at the initial command prompt or at least be able to log off and get to this command screen.

I have tried killing the xwindow, but it just restarts itself.

Hi, you need to set the run level in /etc/inittab look for the line

change the 5 to a 3 and restart the machine.

Not sure about yellowdog, but in every other linux distro I've seen, you can do that by editing /etc/innitab. Toward the beginning of innitab you should see a line that looks like this:

Just change the "5" to "3" and you should boot to a command line login.
