trying to remote to vnc server through vnc client on XP.

Im trying to remote into my Ubuntu box from an Windows XP vnc client that sits on another network. The two networks have no relations, thus the request to connect to the Linux vncserver goes through the internet.

I have opened port 5900 and 5901 on my router to forward to the unix box. I have started the vncserver and have created a password to access it.

I am unable to connect to the linux box via vnc when entering my ip and port number with vnc viewer client in linux. Sometimes the error says connection times out, at other times it says connection refused.

I am wondering if in my router settings if I have two internal ip addresses set to listen to port 5900 and 5901 in the port forwarding table can that confuse the vnc client on the windows box which attempts to connect to the server.

I am asking this because ip address of linux box changed, so i have the old internal ip address and the new internal ipo in the port forwarding table to accept connections from port 5900 or 5901????

The difference that I learned about Linux VNC is that it goes by :display numbers. You would need to tell your Windows XP VNC Client to connect to 192.168.1.2:#, for example.

XP VNC client is not on the same network. It needs the external ip address of the linux network.

ip address:5900:# ????

Just a guess.
