Trying to patch libwnck and create .deb

I've been trying for a couple days now to look for a way to make Gnome respond to the "URGENT" hint, that Gaim utilizes to flash the taskbar button for received message notification.

Through a lot of digging, I came across patches for metacity and libwnck, that enable just this, allowing taskbar buttons to 'blink' when the urgent hint is received.

http://www.people.virginia.edu/~mse5q/blink/

This does exactly what I want, but I'm still new to Linux and have no idea how to apply this patch to libwnck. I came across this thread on another forum, guiding someone on how to patch Nautilus:

http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewt...144&highlight=

The problem is when I get to the part where I drop the .patch into the folder, there is no "patches" folder, and I have no clue where else to put it, or if there's any other way to apply it and compile. I'm hoping to end up with a patched .deb of libwnck.

I've tried searching for patching guides, but have only come across kernel patching, and I'm not sure how similar it would be to what I'm trying to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've seen several threads on different forums asking for flashing taskbar entries. Dropline Gnome for Slackware has already implemented taskbar flashing for urgent hints, and I'm sort of disappointed that regular Gnome is still without it.

Thanks

if the patch is in your current directory ( and you are in the source directory):

patch -Np1 -i ./<patch_name>

recompile with the correct options and create your .deb ( if you don't know how to create a .deb, look into checkinstall, it will create one for you).

Thank you very much, I've been dying for flashing taskbar buttons. I patched it exactly as you said and made the deb using the guide on patching nautilus. You've been a huge help. Thanks again.
