trying to mount drive

disktype /dev/sda

--- /dev/sda
Block device, size 465.8 GiB (500107862016 bytes)
Ext3 file system
UUID F40D8CB8-B108-4705-B10D-5AE7FEAB8BC9 (DCE, v4)
Volume size 465.8 GiB (500107862016 bytes, 122096646 blocks of 4 KiB)

mount -t ext3 /dev/sda /mnt/backupDrive/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

what does sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda yield.

are there any partitions on /dev/sda ?

perhaps this will work:
mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt/backupDrive/
