Trying to install Redhat 9
I am trying to install Redhat on my other machine and I keep running into errors. I download the 3 .iso files from the redhat site and burn them to discs using Nero. I then boot up my other machine from the cd and the mediacheck says that the disc is good. After I click ok to setup I get the following:
Running anaconda, the Red Hat Linux system installer - please wait.... Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/anaconda", line 138, in ? import signal, traceback, string, isys, iutil, time File "/usr/lib/python2.2/tracback.py", line 298 if addr > stopat: ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax install exited abnormally sending termination signals...done At first I thought I had a bad disk and redownloaded the files but I get the same errors. My system consists of the following" AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 512 Ram Biostar Motherboard DVD/CDrom drive 10 gig hard drive 30 gig hard drive If somebody knows whats going on could you please help me.... Thanks.... |
You may have a flakey DVD. I have seen quite a few that don't read burnt CDs well. Have you considered using the iso files on your hard drive to install? That way you don't go through the DVD. Make an install boot floppy with the utilities in the dos utility folder and you can use the hard drive to read the install.

Its probably just as easy to throw a cdrom in there and go as well.

how would I copy the .iso files to my hard drive? I downloaded the .iso files from my other computer which runs windows xp.
|
Pop the cd rom out of your xp box and into the other box and try that.

will do...

See Redhat 9.0's install documentation 3.6. Installing from a Hard Drive before starting. It should also be on the doc cd and in your manual if you purchased a set.

Perhaps you could partition your drive on your Linux box, one a FAT partition big enough to hold the ISOs, copy the ISOs there on your Windows box and then install from the hard disk on the Linux box?
# Freeware partitioning software /dosutils/fips20 on install disk Ranish Partition Manager Tom's Root and Boot Floppy has Linux fdisk |
or..take your HDD from the linux box set the jumpers to slave throw it in you XP box and start the install. When you get to the part about partitioning, select automatic=>use existing free space. However, where would he put grub...b/c the MBR is on the master HDD, no?
