trying to install Red Hat EL 3 on AMD64, but it installs 32-bit
Hi all
I am new to the linux scene, and I am trying to install Red Hat EL 3 on a AMD64 machine, and when installing it installs all the i386 packages instead of i686 (as I was told it should install). Is there a way when installing to switch the 64-bit installation on or something? After installation, if I type in uname -a I get the following: Linux brian 2.4.21-4.EL #1 Fri Oct 3 17:52:56 EDT 2003 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux And some people told me that what I am looking for is ...i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux.. Thanks Dewald |
I am not sure about redhat enterprise linux specifically, but I am quite certain that other redhat/fedora distros come precompiled for specific architectures.
For example if the install states ix86 where x can be from 3 to 6, then this particular image is optimized for the intel 32 bit architecture. The last time I checked, one could not choose to install a 64 bit linux if the CD's contained the 32 bit version. For this reason, I believe that you will have to get the 64 bit version of EL, if available (it seems you have the 32 bit images). |
