I added a VLC PPA and tried to installed the software again, but it doesnt work. It looks like it should be completed, but I still have the old version of VLC (The Luggage). Why?
Code:
owner@desktop:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily Thanks! |
When I first started with Slackware seven years ago, there was no Slackbuilds dot org and I was green and learning by mistakes. I did most of my installations by compiling.
So here is what I used to do: Try to compile the software. When the compile failed and threw a dependency error, search for the dependency, until I found it. (Sometimes the dependency is part of a larger package, so tracking down the package can be a PITA.) Try to compile the dependency. When the compile failed and threw a dependency error, search the web for the dependency, until I found it. Try to compile the dependency. When the compile failed and threw a dependency error--well, you get the picture. Eventually, I would try to compile the dependency and it would compile with no errors, then I could work my way back up the compiles until, eventually, the desired software would install and work. This is what is known as "dependency hell." It is also known as "Slackware is a damned fine teacher." (It is also how I discovered LQ.) |

So I see this is dependency hell, lol, but I am still wondering why it is happening. Like I said before, it seems my package manager does know what dependencies need to be installed, because it tells me about them. So why isn't it prompting me to install them instead of telling me, you need this, but it is not going to be installed? I don't get it. Thanks. |
Regarding the temperature, do you have an nVidia card? I read that someone is working on a Slackbuild for Bumblebee, but it's nowhere near ready yet. My two laptops run fine with Slackware and the temperature is under control; both of them have Intel video.
As regards the dependencies and your package manager, it could be that the packages required for the dependencies are not in your configured repos. |
I'm going to start some new threads about my Slackware problems eventually but no, it's an Intel card. It's just a little netbook actually. Under Windows it barely gets warm, but in Slackware it is much hotter. Thats one of the main reasons I don't use it. There are others though, just problems I need to fix.
About this problem though, I was able to install VLC Twoflower with the PPA provided by TroN-0074(thanks!). BUT it still will not play .rm files! :( |
