trying to install DBI module
 
while in apache2 ubuntu trying to install the DBI function recieved error messages:

something...can not find directory.... a whole bunch of these.

when i run the test.pl script in the DBI-1.609 folder it gives me this:

DBI object version 1.601 does not match $DBI::VERSION 1.609 at /usr/lib/perl/5.8/DynaLoader.pm line 245.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /home/justin/Desktop/DBI-1.609/blib/lib/DBI.pm line 263.
Compilation failed in require at test.pl line 23.

i could upgrade the version but i dont even know what im looking for.

i remember when i do perl Makefile.PL a bunch of messages comes up saying i need to disable threading. and another one says to change the LANG variable... i changed the LANG variable to UNSET but does anyone know how to disable perl threading? thanks.

"something"?? Going to have to provide some actual messages........

The DBI module has prerequisites. When you run "perl Makefile.PL", it'll probably complain about what's missing. Download those dependencies, and install them, until you get everything satisfied. The test is failing because the module didn't get installed.....

I thought that this would install all the dependencies for me but I'm missing something else. i first tried to install the dbi module itself, do i need to remove the downloaded folder first before i can go ahead with the bundle?

i think what i have to do is create the CSV_XS.pm file and i found the source on cpan but where do i put it? meaning, where to i save the file to?

Those are *not* the same errors. Apparently you're missing
most basic stuff to compile anything ... try:

apt-get install build-essential


I'm not too familiar with Ubuntu, but chances are you're
missing kernel-headers and other things, too.

Speaking of which: before trying to install all that stuff
from source/CPAN ... have you actually checked Ubunuts
repositories for the dbi module(s)? I'm fairly certain you'll
find them there, ready for install...

installed essentials:

apt-get install build-essential

then was able to install DBI module.


had some trouble installing the DBD::mysql module but finally figured out that i didnt have the mysql_config file. installed that and now i am able to connect and update my db through perl.

That's good for modules that aren't in the repos, but for those that are, its safer to use the repo one.

Because they won't e.g. break if you do an update of the system.
Or because they'll always match the pre-existing standards, and
you'll get warnings from the packet management system when you're
about to do something silly.
