trying to install brother printer
I am told by brother support that Linux is not compatible with brother printers, is there any way around this. Don't really feel like returning the printer or going back to windows os.

Not much we can tell you..you don't tell us what model Brother printer, version/distro of Linux you're using, how the printer is connected, or anything that you've done/tried to get it to work.

Generally speaking brother has pretty good linux support, offering up drivers for most, if not all, of their printers and MFC type devices. i suppose it depends on your actual hardware, but my MFC-9700 has been running just fine with linux for about 10 years.

We can give you no help, WHEN YOU PROVIDE NO DETAILS. See first reply. You have not even answered basic questions about what model of printer, Linux, etc. Provide details and we can try to help. If you're not going to, there's not much point in posting.
::EDIT::
you posted the model number while I was typing the reply. Did you try looking at Brothers website????
http://support.brother.com/g/b/downl...870dw_us_eu_as
There is a Linux driver there, along with instructions on how to download and install it.

It will depend on what linux version you are using. For instance, here is a video I did on installing a brother printer on Linux Lite.

...after you were asked for details multiple times, and still don't provide them. And after you DID provide a model number (still haven't said what version of Linux), you were handed a link to the Brother website, with the driver and details.
How much more assistance did you require?? And there isn't any forum anywhere that is going to be able to help you, if you don't provide details and ask a clear question.

Just stopping back in to say thank you for your help with your video.... still a little lost but I'll get there sooner or later. it's good to know there is help here and that I will be able to install this printer soon enough.
as I mentioned , I am not savvy to the pc language needed to survive in this PC world. As a friend once told me, I'm still on the curve.
Again , thank you

I've been using Brother as my printer of choice for many years. I'm currently using the Brother HL-2130 laser printer with the Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e (recommended) driver supplied by CUPS. It works perfectly. As I said, I have never had any problems with Brother printers which is why Brother is the brand I choose when buying a printer.

Thank You ... fellow Brother user, brother has always been my choice as well. It's just that I was convinced to switch to Linux, not that I am regretting it, which I am liking. wife has an HP printer which has not printed jobs for me.
I will Laugh but not cry, I may shout but not get mad.... these things always have there way of working out.
Again , Thank You

Sorry for the issue here at LQ, some members can come across as terse.
I suggest that you read the following to insure that you provide good information when posting an inquiry;
Quote:
FYI: I suggest that you look at 'How to Ask Questions the Smart Way' so in the future your queries provide information that will aid us in diagnosis of the problem or query.
|
You should be able to get the .deb file from; http://support.brother.com/g/b/downl...870dw_us_eu_as
Then use the Ubuntu wiki to help install cups ppd file; https://wiki.edubuntu.org/HardwareSu...ther/MFC-7820N
While not for your printer there is a cups installation procedure at; https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ha...inters/MFC7340
You could post to the http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php? since your LQ icon shows Ubuntu.
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!
