Trying to get Java working on Chromium, can't make symbolic link

I just started using Linux today (just used windows until now, had to switch because of reasons), and I can't get Java working on Chromium.

I've got both jdk1.8.0_25 and jre1.8.0._25 as files in my home folder, but java just isn't showing up in my chrome plug-ins.

I tried to follow the instructions here, and was able to get to my plug-ins directory. But when I try to create a symbolic link, I get the following message:

"ln -s /usr/local/java/jre1.7.0/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
ln: failed to create symbolic link ‘./libnpjp2.so’: File exists"

But Java still isn't working, so I'm really confused. If possible please use really simple language in any replies, because I am super new to this and still have no idea what I'm doing.

the browser Chromium already had java

icedtea and is was installed in the Operating system by default

now if you want to REPLACE the default icedtea java with a different versio0n

you will need to reset "alternatives"

But java isn't working. When I try to verify what java version I have, there's just a grey box, saying "plug in not supported"
