Trying to get fedora core 2 on an ibm thinkpad 390e to detect the modem
 

I know fedora core 2 is an old version. Does anybody know how to get fedora core 2 to detect and set up the modem so I can use it. I have run the program to tell me what hardware I have and it doesn't show a modem. The online descriptions shows it came with a modem. I bought this off Ebay.

OK, but you really need to get Fedora 8 to stay with them or change distro's. 2 is too old to be safe. As for the modem you'll need to know what chipset it uses. For that you can use any existing installed OS or use a Live CD like KNOPPIX if none. Unfortunately research shows yours is a Lucent PCI "Win Modem". Two choices there: save headaches and buy an external hardware modem (spose they could be gotten cheap by now) or see http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/

Fedora 8 would be a bad move, that 390e only has a PII 333 and can only have 256mb of RAM. Something like DSL, Puppy, ZenWalk or a custom Slackware install would be much more appropriate.

I'm sure if there was expendable money available, one would probably be better putting it towards a computer rather than a modem.
Lucent modem is well supported in Linux, the ones with the mars chip are the only PCI modems that can be installed on 64bit Linux. Just use the scanModem tool at linmodems.org and read the modemData.txt file amongst the many text files it produces. This will tell you what you got, where to get source for compiling modem module (driver). All the other documentation produced by scanModem should be read also for more assistance.
