Trying to edit a file

I'm trying to edit my /etc/smb.conf file but when I use gedit /etc/smb.conf
it asks me if I want to make a new file. And I know when doing that the file doesn't exist. So I wondering if I have samba or not. But when I do a "smbmount" it gives me a list of options.

So do I have samba or not.

And Some one told me and I also read that if I want to mount a drive to be shared on my home network I need to add the drive or directory to the smb.conf file.

What I am trying to do is trasfer some file from my linux box to my win box.
So please can someone help me.

by default, samba gives you a /etc/samba/smb.conf-sample, wich you may copy to /etc/samba/smb.conf, there is no default config file after clean install
