trying to connect a printer to Ubuntu 12.10

I recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop. In the install process the windows 7 would not allow dual install so I installed the Ubuntu without keeping windows 7. I am trying to connect to my home network printer that I was using with the windows 7. I am not able to get anywhere with this. The browser does not find my printer or my home network. What can I do and how do I find the URI for my printer? I am not a computer expert, I just know basics of operation. Ubuntu does not seem very intuitive with this.

First, you have to verify that you have an existing network connectivity with the printer. How's your network setup? (which one is connected to which one)

Does your printer have an IP assigned to it? Is it a network printer? More importantly, does it have a Linux driver? Without that, you're not going to get very far.

Also, what is the make/model of the printer?

I have a networked printer. For convenience, I gave it a static IP address.

If it's a wireless DHCP printer, you might be able to see its address in your router's configuration tables. Look for something like "DCHP Client tables."

Some routers may even show wired connections.

printer issue with Ubuntu

My printer issue with Ubuntu has been partially resolved. I can now print from Ubuntu to my printer but I can not use the scan function.

What make/model of printer? Maybe someone where can recommend something that would help, but that information would be essential.

printer issue with Ubuntu

The printer is an HP Photo snart B210 series printer/copier/scanner. I can now print but I can't scan into my computer with it. This is not the only issue I am having but I am trying to fix things one item at a time. Thank you for responding.

Do you have HPLIP installed? If not, that might fix the problem. It's in the repos.

I believe that the HPLIP program and the graphical frontend (hp-toolbox on the comand line) are two different packages. It would be easiest to install them both, then use the HPLIP GUI to discover and set up the printer.

When i try to download hplip it asks several questions which it needs to determine what to download. all is well except it only goes to ubuntu 12.10 and I am using 13.10. will that work anyway? Will this allow me to use the scan function on my printer? I 'm sorry if I am being dumb but I am.

Check the second post at the site below. What happens when you type 'xsane' or 'sudo xsane' in the terminal?

Did you look in the Ubuntu software center? When I used Ubuntu, HPLIP was always available from the Ubuntu repository. If you can find the software in the repo, it's best to get it from there.

I have an HP L7680 all-in-one and HPLIP unlocked all the features of the machine.

If you are downloading from the HPLIP website, it's very likely that selecting 12.10 in the dialog will work okay.
