Try to install Kubuntu but can't get past welcome screen
 

I have tried several times and it seems ages for the disk to even load up the welcome and choose language screen. I am disappointed as i have also tried ubuntu to no avail and now am thinking of completely not using Linux at all If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thnks

The best thing you could do, is to help us first. Providing us with details of your hardware, as well as which version of Ubuntu you are trying to install, would make wonders. With so little detail, I am not even sure where to start...

I have an Acer Extensa 2300 laptop that has 512mb and Intel celeron. I am trying to install Kubuntu 7.10 which i was given a cd from canonical. It loads up ok, then i hit install and it takes a while for this load up. After that i select english and hit next and then it takes ages and then it disappears. Although the desktop is still there the install doesn't go any further. I hope this helps you.

You could try the alternate install cd. If you ask me, the whole live + install cd was a stupid idea to begin with... but nobody ever asks me!

Just check the 'alternate cd' checkbox at the bottom. For Kubuntu, you just download the ...alternate-i386.iso from a Kubuntu mirror.
It's the exact same system, but with a text based installer. - If your system hangs with both systems at exactly the same spot, I'm guessing that it's a problem with the installer... but there still is a chance that your burner or RAM might be faulty.

First of all, thanks for being cool and giving some details. Sometimes people take it the wrong way :).

Well, the first good news is that there are members in this forum using Linux on your laptop, as you can see here, he/she is having a problem with the sound card.

I have to agree with oskar as well. Try the alternate CD. Ubuntu was cooler when we had two disks: One for Live and one for the actual installation. But I understand that this way they are saving a lot of bandwidth and money on ship-it as well.

But back to your problem: If trying with the alternate CD still fails, boot up again. On the first screen, you are given a few options, like running a memtest and checking the CD's integrity. I'd recommend doing both. If you are still unlucky, try asking the member in that thread I linked if he/she had encounter any problems installing Linux. Who knows, maybe he/she had used some commands to get it to install.

Thanks to you both, i will give it a go and see what happens, I will download the alternative cd and try that. With ubuntu i had an issue with gnome and got the error message gnome error daemon.
