Try to install firefox
 

I am try to install a newer firefox version to my computer.(1.5.0.6) When I download it a box appears. I have no idea what to do after that. I have looked at other fourms with the firefox in it but I am still confused. I am using a suSE linux with pentium mobile. If possible could someone give me a very detailed step by step process to get this to work on my computer.

...only then can you get any instructions!

SuSE is RPM based. You need to download the RPM package made specifically for SuSE. Once downloaded you can use YAST to install it. Right click the file name and select Install w/YAST (forget exact wording)

I downloaded it from mozilla. When it a the download thing came up One option was to save to disk. I did that which saved to my desktop. Then a package appears not a box sorry.

Try the first google hit for suse firefox rpm

Yast is SuSE's package manager

Get the rpm from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/mozilla/firefox .

Once I download it to my desktop. Is there a better place to save it to because when I click on it a message appears. ( The action you request needs a root privileges. Ah, well now that's a different kettle of fish isn't it? If the machine belongs to your school they probably don't want you installing stuff without their permission. At this point I'd suggest you take this up with whomever is responsible for this machine.

When I log in it ask me if I am conneted to there server. Would that make a deference?

You have just discovered a major security feature of Linux. If you do not know the root password, you cannot install software. It does not matter if you are connected to a server or not. Whoever installed Linux on the computer has the root password. If that person will share it with you, you may be able to install the updated version of Mozilla.

As an alternative, you might consider asking the person who put Linux on the computer to install the requested software or, better yet, ask him to do a full update. This is pretty easy to do using yum or up2date, it just takes a while to finish if there are a lot of packages that have been changed since the last time it was updated.
