Troubleshooting Dial up Modem Connection
Hi, this is a Linux newbie here trying to get his old modem to dial-up to the Internet.
OS: Red Hat 9 Modem: Supra Express 33.6 (apologies, i cannot post URL tags because I have yet to put up 5 posts in this forum - pls copy & paste to your browser manually: Here is my network configuration: darthn00b.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album01&id=linux01 When I select the modem & click on Activate, here's the unhelpful err msg (there was NO modem dial-up sound): darthn00b.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album01&id=linux02 Here is my /etc/wvdial.conf file: darthn00b.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album01&id=linux03 Here is my /etc/ppp/peers/ppp0 file: darthn00b.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?set_albumName=album01&id=linux04 Would some kind soul assist? TIA! |
Had a look at the images you have but nothing really indicates what is going on. Also went and did a search on the hardware specs for this modem and see it is a winmodem. Now winmodems are notorius for causing problems. You would need to find the necessary drivers for this to work with Linux and find some howto's. My personal advice, given the antiquity of this modem, is to go out and buy an external 56K serial modem which are generally very cheap and work well with Linux.

I have much better luck with an external modem. I have a lot of trouble with my USR modem and so do others as far as I have found. I have had no problems with my Best Data. Internal winmodems were a hassle no matter the brand or type. Good luck.

The reason why I dug out my 33.6kbps external modem is because Linux couldn't detect my onboard 56kbps modem. That's why I am trying out some antique equipment ;) Anyway, thanks for the replies. Seems that the main problem with Linux today is still the hardware support.
Cannot detect my onboard sound card, cannot detect my onboard modem, problems with my onboard LAN card too..... maybe i should just stick with Windows? hmmmm.... |
