troubleshoot mail command


Never used the 'mail' command before - it does not seem to work. Is there a guide somewhere on how to configure whatever 'mail' requires to send messages to an external
SMTP server?

more details

here is the form of the command that I used ( names changed to protect the guilty )

# mail newuser@myisp.com < filename

the was no error message, just went directly back to # prompt.

and if you want to send one or multiple attachments, you can use mutt that works on command line. There is also another one I don't remember

you can also use something called "PINE" as a mail reader.
