Trouble with tar

I am on a fresh install or Archlinux, when I want to extra a file, I get the errors
Code:
tar: This does not look like a tar archieve
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
I did tar xvjf kernel.bz2
the file I am trying to extra is in bz2 extension, a download from kernel.org

are you really sure that that j is in there? it doesn't' appear to be processing the j flag at all. older versions of tar used to use a y for bz2, might want to try that. otherwise, does "file" report that it is what it says it is? did you compile this tar yourself? i guess it's possible it mightn't have libbzip2 compiled into it.
