Trouble with SuSE on laptop

My friend is trying to set up SuSE 9.3 Professional on his laptop. He has a Gateway 4540. Neither the modem and the sound card works. All the cards are recognized and seemingly configured properly. We are both at our wits end, and SuSE is saying that it would be several days to get back to him. However several days from now, we will be back at home, and he is talking about going back to Windows! He doesn't want to, but he feels like he will have to if he can't get these things worked out! Please help us! Thanks in advance!

Please provide more details about the steps you tried to take, any system or error messages that were displayed, the output of lsmod and lspci, and so forth. Simply saying that things don't work is too vague to be helpful, and the root cause could be just about anything. For example, regarding the sound, it may be that the sound is working, but the volume is muted, or that the soundcard just needs a different kernel module loaded, or that you just need to run alsaconf. Knowing more details about what you've already tried to do would be a huge help -- J.W.

I think the sound and modem is built into the chipset.

Sound Card:
Gateway laptop
Card Model 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M)
No Sound
Install found sound card. No sound. Reran installation several times.

Modem Log:
Code:

This is listed in the Already Configured Devices in YaST:
Code:

-Modem
Configured as modem0 with provider maglobe
-Rioworks 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC97 Modem Controller
Configured as modem1 with provider maglobe

We are getting a dial tone, and can connect with Windows. Thank you.

Any suggestions?

For the modem:

Go to yast->network devices->modem
click change...
Select the modem and click on the edit button in the Modems section.
Uncheck th "Detect dial tone" checkbox. If it is already unchecked, click details and type ATX3 in the init 3 box. If the checkbox was checked, do not do the second step, it is not necessary. Just uncheck it and it should work.

I don't know about the sound card. Many people have trouble configuring soundcards on linux.
