Unhappy trouble with jack..

ok i've been using linux for a week and debian for a day. all this stuff is totally new to me, i grew up on ms-dos and then windows, so i get the whole command line thing. but other than that, all of this is weird. right now i'm having trouble with jackd (the audio connection kit), i installed it and everything, but when i try to open an app that uses it, like jack rack or ardour, it can't get through to the jack server. is there some command linery i need to do in order to get jackd up and running? ardour suggests it may be open under a different user name, but i've tried as root and as the other user and both are having trouble. my primary objective in getting linux was to have something fast for music production, but stable enough that i could trust it onstage, so this is a serious issue for me. if anyone has a similar problem, or even better, a solution, i would love to hear it. thanks.

Sounds like a user issue. I found a few links that may help here and here. Hope they help.
