Trouble with installing 2.4.24 kernel

I have taken every step to compile and install my new kernal (2.4.24). When I boot it up it says:

VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernal panic: VFS: Unable to mount fs on 00:00

When I did 'make xconfig' I made sure I wasnt loading any modules

-Thanks

in the /boot/grub/grub.conf file change the line
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.24 ro root=LABEL=/
to
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.24 ro root=/dev/hdx

type your root partition for "hdx"
