Trouble with Gutsy and MCE using as a Hybrid machine

I've built a hybrid machine using Gutsy 7.10 AMD 64 and have installed Linux MCE 7.10 AMD 64.

I first started out just trying to learn Gutsy and get used to Linux. When in konsole, I used to be at speedy@AMD64.

After a few weeks, I decided it was time to install MCE 7.10 64 bit from the 2 CD version.

After installing MCE, I'm noticing that when I go into konsole now, I start at speedy@dcerouter.

I think I have something setup wrong??

I'd like to be able to run the PC in Gutsy most of the time and then occasionally, re-boot into MCE to watch streamed content.

Can anyone help me understand what to do?

Regards,
Speedy

Hi -

You haven't given enough information to determine exactly what you should do, but:

1. It sounds like you want to "dual-boot"

2. The key your "boot loader", which allows you to select one or the other operating systems.

3. Here is a good, brief tutorial on one of the most popular boot loaders, "grub":

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-cha...in-ubuntu.html

4. Your first step is to familiarize yourself with grub, and some of the startup options.

5. Next, you need to determine whether or not you still *have* two operating systems (or whether you inadvertantly removed one OS when you installed the other.

You can easily check this out using grub.

6. If necessary, you'll have to re-install the second OS. This can easily be done in a way that lets you keep the first one. Google, or post another question to LQ in a new thread.

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Thank you for this information. I'm trying it right now. Another thing I've notice after installing MCE, is that some of the packagaes I had in Ubuntu went away. I've seen the instructions several times to go into system adminstration....I don't have adminstration under syste.

I used to have a package manager, but no longer.

I'm curious if there isn't a few basic packages I should go get and install? Or would this really mess things up?

I have three log in options when Kubuntu starts up; speedy, samba share helper; pluto speedy

before installing MCE, I had just speedy.

I lost my network capability to my other home computers that I had with just Kubuntu. Now when I click Sambr, I get linuxmce and then dce router and then public & private folders in the dce router root.

Please let me know what other info is needed and I'll try my best to convey it.

Thanks again!!

Speedy
