Trouble Typing Special Characters (Debian)

I would like to be able to type a few things occassionally in French or possibly Latin, and so I'd like an easy way to type in letters with diacretics and accent marks. I do not want to switch my keyboard layout, even temporarily, or make modifications to a configuration file if possible.

In other words, is there a way to type characters like (I copied and pasted this from a French website) as easily as I would in Windows: Alt+0233?

install Windows 2k or XP and enable multi language support in the control panel, select the language you want and reboot (cd may be required) after sys boot a panel will appear on the task bar that will let you select all the languages you enabled in the previous step
