trouble talking to the net

Have just installed Mandriva Linux 2005 and after working through the network connection I seems to get connected okay (braodband cable through a Motorola surboard modem) but nothing I put in the Mozilla command line will get any response - it take a while but comes back with "the connection was refused when attempting to connect....".
Is there something I need to be doing?
cheers
A

Hello and Welcome to LQ, fellow melbournite!

Bear with me as we run through the broad tests:
1) have you made sure that your modem is linux-capable?
2) can you ping? ping yourself, (by name and number) and try pinging something on the internet- google is a good one.
3) have you put the necesary settings into the browser?

hope this helps

A common mistake is that the gateway address is not set. Run the /sbin/route command and make sure your default gateway is set.

Another common mistake is the DNS addresses. Open /etc/resolv.conf and make sure the addresses given by your ISP are at the top. Sometimes the computer's hostname or network name is at the top and that will cause timeouts.
