Trouble Starting GUI on BT5R3

Hello all,
I am having trouble starting the GUI on BT5R3. I boot the OS, and it lets me start to enter commands, but when I type startx the screen goes dark. I originally thought it was just taking its time, but after about 45 minutes there was no change. Note: startx is the first and only command I used.

Try Kali Linux, the successor of backtrack. It is a whole lot stable and it also works better in general......if my memory serves me correctly it actually boots in the GUI automatically. Here is the link to Kali's home page:http://www.kali.org/

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't really answer my question. Assuming that I want to keep backtrack, does anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it?

We need a lot more info to help you with that:
- Which videochip are you using?
- Is this a native install, running from a live-medium or a VM?
- Can you SSH into the installation to get access to the logs?
