Trouble Shooting the Developer Console
 

I recently enabled developer mode on my Chromebook 14. I successfully downloaded Crouton, and then Ubuntu. I was able to switch back and forth between Chrome OS and Ubuntu just fine. However, after logging out of Ubuntu, and restarting my Chromebook 14, I wasn't able to log back into Ubuntu. I just get the black Linux screen that shows ¨Developer Console¨ at the top. And, it's requiring a ¨Localhost¨ login, and won't accept the username I originally chose.

1. How do I get passed the Developer Console since the login isn't working?

2. Usage in Ubuntu: I recall having a hard time running a program (Firefox, for example) once it was in the download folder. I downloaded it as the browser, but couldn't find out how to run it after it was downloaded, for the life of me.

3. Downloading and Running programs in Ubuntu: I do plan to begin web development, and I plan to download: Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Git, Heroku, to name a few. Do you have a recommended link that will help me learn how to not only download programs, but run them once they're downloaded?

I can't help you with the first, but can help with the latter two.

A2. What do you mean by in the Download folder? You downloaded Firefox from the Mozilla site? Now you'll have to extract it, and possibly build it. Even better is to install it following the answer to 3, unless you need something special like nightly builds.

A3. Installing software can be done using either the Ubuntu Software Center, or by using Synaptic Package manager. Using SC may be more friendly for new users, but Synaptic gives a little more control over packages installed. In Synaptic, first thing you must do it make sure your package listings (cache) are up to date, by clicking "Reload". SC will do this automatically, IIRC. Now use the search facility of each program to find what you are looking for, such as Firefox; alternately you may browse the categories for what you want. If asked, install additional dependencies (if you don't, the program you want may not install).

Running them is pretty simple, their icons will be added so that all you have to do is click that icon in Unity (or use Unity's search facility to find them).

Thanks goumba. I downloaded Firefox into my downloads folder, but being new to Linux, didn't know what to do next to run it. You recommended ¨installing it¨ from the software center. I do recall someone downloading the software center in a youtube video, but they didn't take much time stepping people through the process, and showing exactly how to do that. Can you elaborate on this? Or, point me in the right direction where I can see something like a ¨Linux How-to?¨

The current problem- The screen I currently can't get passed was asking for a ¨localhost login.¨ I tried entering ¨root,¨ but now it is requiring a ¨localhost login #~¨ which I'm unfamiliar with. It seems like an easy solution, but I'm just not familiar with Linux or Ubuntu yet.

Software Center will be installed by default in Ubuntu, AFAIK.
