trouble installing redhat linux 9
 

i tried installing redhat linux 9 on on a virtual pc, the software i used were.. "windows Virtual PC", and "sun-Virtual PC Box".. i followed the usual instructions, and opted to install in the graphical mode, and the following problem keeps occuring..

the installatin stops(remains static), at
"running install...
running/sbin/loader"

i read a number of other forums and there was one thing which i could try as i'm VERY new to this..

in the boot screen i typed.. "linux ide=nodma"

still the same result..

my hardware specs are as follows..

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz
2 GB ram
160 GB SATA HD
52x CD rom

i would very much appreciate ANY help with this.

Redhat 9 is too old to support your hardware.
( Released year 2002, I think )

Now, 10 releases later, we have "Redhat" Fedora 10.

RedHat 9 is truly quite old (unless Fedora 9 was meant), but even so the problem could be with Virtual PC itself. Several people have problems with it when installing Linuxes.

Maybe you should try out VirtualBox or VMware. VMware even has some pre-installed VMware image files on their site with Linux and BSD systems. Give it a try. I assume that having a working install for testing is what you need, and not necessarily an outdated RedHat 9 (unless you're doing some historical research work).

RH9 predates sata. So I am guessing that it sees the sata drives and has no clue what to do with them. After RH9 Red Hat split into two main groups; RHEL(Red Hat Enterprise Linux) which is an enterprise (very stable) version which is only available with paid support/updates, and Fedora the bleeding edge community development (free) version. One of the problems with Fedora is that it only has a support life of 13 months and paying for support for RHEL is not an option for most of us. There is a third choice with the best of both worlds, Centos. Since the source code for RHEL is open source, it is available. So Centos is RHEL with the logos removed. It has the same support life as RHEL (5+ years) but is free to download/update. Current version of RHEL/Centos is 5.2.
