The OpenNMS training was very good. But the documentation is in hard back form. However there is a VMware image of OpenNMS on source forge that you can run on your laptop either linux or windoz. See the last line of the page

It takes a lot of room to un-tar the file but is easy to configure.
You’ll need the VMware player download of course.
Once you untar the file there are directions to modify the /opt/opennms/etc/snmpconfig & discovery something or else.
As for a full blown install follow the directions on the web.

get the core tar.gz file apache-tomcat-6.0.10.tar
un-tar it in the /var/usr directory and link it to /opt/tomcat ln –s /opt/tomcat Then /opt/tomcat/bin/start.sh to start it.

use wget and the rrdtool rpm, perl rrdtool rpm, php rrdtool rpm, rrdtool devel rpm
I go to the site and copy the rpm link location then wget paste the link.
rpm –Uhv * to install all the files
