Trouble installing Java VM on FC2, Mozilla 1.7.2

Put simply, when I follow the instruction's on Sun's website (http://java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.jsp#14) to install Java, after making the link in the plugins folder, Mozilla won't open. No errors, it just plays the loading animation on the cursor, shows up "Loading Web Browser" in the taskbar and then just closes.

I have always used this page and it has worked....I do notice however that FC2 is NOT listed as a supported os. I have used this rpm method on RHAS3 and on Redhat 9 and it worked and they are not listed as supported either.

hope this helps,

I don't remember the page off the top of my head, but I googled for something like "java mozilla linux" when I needed to do my java install and found a step-by-step page for doing so. It was somewhere in the first page of search results, and it was authored by a non-Sun employee. Very straightforward, easy. So maybe google might help you.

Suddenly I realize after actually looking a little closer that Mozilla 1.7 isn't listed as supported... Should that make a difference?

Edit: I used the ns610-gcc32 version of the plugin rather than the regular ns610 one and the java applet will load and run but it's extremely choppy...
The applet I tested it with was a Slime Volleyball game that is really well made and quite fun. This is the link to it: http://www.student.uwa.edu.au/~wedgey/slime1/ . Is it just me that gets poor performance on this? Or is there some sort of known fix that will make it lay normal?
