trouble faxing

I just recently added a RH9 partition to my Win98 Dell, so now I have a dual boot system. I am tryinig to learn how to fax. I have a fax modem installed on the machine, and it works under Win98. But I'm having some trouble with faxing from Linux.

I want to fax a one-line document called faxtest.ps. Near as I can tell, efax and efix came as part of my RH9 distro.

So in a terminal window, I type fax send xxx-xxxx faxtest.ps

I get this error message:

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

hylafax is easy to do this!

Some additional info, indicating there may be some other problems with my modem setup. I don't know what it means, but I typed statserial and got this:

statserial: can't open device `/dev/ttyS1': Permission denied

And then I tried running KPPP (whatever that is), and when I clicked on query modem, I got "Unable to open modem" in the message box, and
"Opener: received OpenDevice
error opening modem device !
Opener: received RemoveLock"
in the terminal window.
