i have windows xp installed first then i installed fedora 12 and when i try to boot into other or windows xp it says unsupported format i fiddled around with the boot conf using other forums for a guide but i cant figure it out my conf file is as follows
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,2)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root
# initrd /initrd-[generic-]version.img
#boot=/dev/sda
default=2
timeout=20
splashimage=(hd0,2)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
hiddenmenu
title GNU GRUB 2, (1.98)
kernel /grub2/core.img
title Fedora (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 ro root=/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root noiswmd LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us rhgb quiet
initrd /initramfs-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.img
title microsoft windows xp
root (hd0,2)

I edited your title to be a little calmer...

You implied that Windows is on the first partition (good thing). If so, then the entry in menu.lst should be "root (hd0,0)" (no quotes)

you have both fedora and windows set to THE SAME PARTITION

from the fedora install dvd run it in rescue mode and then run this command
Code:
fdisk -l
this will give you a list of the partitions

MS Windows SHOULD BE THE VERY FIRST hd0,0
if it is not on the first partition on the first drive then windows will "kick and scream " and through a fit. ( think of a 3 year old's tantrum )

if you installed grub on the MBR ( default ) and replaced ms's bootloader

there will be an " * " on the line for hda1 from the fdick command

John I'm using the "Fedora 12 x86_64 Live KDE" disk, how do I get it into rescue mode?

All I see in the list is Boot, Verify and boot, Memory test and Boot from local drive.

I can edit these but not sure what to edit.

You can't need the CD 1 or DVD. Got CD 1 and ran in Rescue mode.
Thanks,
John
