You have to set USB as first boot device in BIOS and plug the USB drive beforehand while system reboots or starts from poweroff.

It worked!

For anyone else who may find this thread whilst struggling with a similar issue:

The link to provided by colorpurple21859 worked a treat. There where a few problems though:

1. The link to BOOTX64.efi grubx64.efi Mokmanager.efi doesn't work you can get the files from

2. When I booted from usb and tried the installer the first time it said that it couldn't find /live/vimluz so I copied all the files inside of /EFI/Boot to the usb directory

after that the install works perfectly! The only thing is I've not tried booting into windows again since the install, it isn't listed (I presume boot repair will fix) but xubunto and kali can both be loaded from the grub menu.
