Trim command taking forever to complete

I have installed Linux Mint 13 xfce on my very old laptop (Fujitsu N6110) and it's running great, much faster than XP. I have a Sandisk X110 SSD and I have tried the trim command "# sudo fstrim -v /" but it is taking forever to finish. The computer is basically unresponsive as the SSD is so busy with trim, clicking on something on the desktop for example takes about 30 seconds to register. It's been running for an hour now and still no sign of finishing, so I assume this is not normal for trim?

The laptop is to old to be able to set AHCI, only IDE mode if that matters. The SSD does support trim (determined by running "sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda | grep "TRIM supported")
