Has anyone tried Ubuntu 6.10 with Pavillion DV5118TX? I am asking this because I tried Ubuntu 6.06 with this laptop I have (dual boot with originally XP Home) and it totally messed up my system. It installed perfectly but then failed to boot into GUI and always remains on Command line. Startx and init5 do not work. I do not know what it is the problem as this laptop has Hitachi SATA HDD, nVidia GE Force Go 7400 Graphics card and Intel Duo Core 1.66 GHz processor.

I have Ubuntu 6.10 with me and I am afraid to install it now as I had reinstalled Windows XP on my system and completely washed the HDD again. I do not want to mess it up again. Some say that it is due to SATA, some say it is due to Graphics card. Can anyone please help? If anyone has tested this with similar laptop or PC, please let me know.

It can be both but if you had it installed then the likely issue will be nvidia. Download the nivdia driver and install as the directions say.
