Tried two distros, can't install either

I'm a noob that needs help. I've installed Mandrake before, and it was pretty straight foreward. Its been a few years since I've done it, and now that I'm trying to install Linux on a new machine, I'm having difficulties.
I downloaded and burned Mandrake 10. When I try to install, I make it just past selecting the license agreement when the install locks up. The screen shows the following line "Installing driver for disk/ide|scsi|hardware_raid|firewire card parport_pc". That's as far as I can get. I'm willing to bet its something to do with the fact this machine has SATA drives.
The other distro I tried was the Mandriva Live. It loads up, then goes to a blue screen and freezes. I watched it in verbose mode, and everything looked fine.
I've installed a second drive so I can dual boot, with XP being on the original drive and Linux on the second drive.
The machine I'm trying to install on is as follows

Dell XPS 600 Dual Core
1 DVD player on Master IDE
1 CD ROM on slave IDE
Hard drive 1 on SATA 0 (unsure as to brand, was in the machine)
Hard drive 2 on SATA 1 (Western Digital 80 Gig, FAT 32)
1 Gig memory
Onboard firewire, and ethernet

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Ive done some googleing and I don't think that SATA Drivers are included in the installation cd
Try this:

my temporary suggestion: switch mobo's BIOS to ATA hd mode, install (with no hangs probably) and after that rebuild kernel, including SATA chipset support.
