Trend Chipaway Virus

I have just installed mandrake 9.1 and everything is working fine except from the restart. I dont get any error messages at all and everything says ok, but when it gets to the restarting computer syntex it just hangs.
I am guessing that this may have something to do with the trend chipaway virus report that I have a virus. I did not get this screen till I installed linux on a separate partition to windows, so I presume it is some old dos program find that there has been alterations in my boot sector, (as this is how all ancient virus scans work right?).
Anyway I am a newbie to linux but know a bit about computers, so any advice would be thanked.

The option to use chipaway is in the bios. Most people recommend turning it off. Normally one would tap the delete key to get into the bios during the POST sequence (just after powering the system up).

Why turn it off? It's always been on by default on my mobo.

The scanner is just a software. When your Mandrake tried to write the bootsector (to install LILO), the anti-virus software probably reacted as for a virus.

The general recommendation is to turn it off because they cause more problems than they are worth. They are there to protect the boot sector from being over written by a virus. By changing the MBR the system perceives an infection. I use MSI boards and this is turned off by default.

I have disabled the trend chipaway virus, and the system boots fine now. But, the mandrake still hangs when restarting or shutting down. Any advice on this?
