Transparent windows

Hi,
New to Linux....using KDE and I want to make my windows transparent so that I can see my desktop through them.

"Real" transparency is not available in the current XFree86 release, but several applications (most notably xshells such as aterm and Eterm) do support quasi-transparency. This means they copy the desktop background beneath them (and perhaps shade it a bit) and display it, creating an illusion of transparency. All of these applications are configured in a different way so I suggest you look up the documentation for the app you're trying to make transparent.

If we're lucky full support for true transparency will be included XFree86 4.4 or 4.5 release. The Freedesktop X Server project has a lot of stuff with transparency and similar effects going on.

I kinda dig the quasi-transparency thing, huwpttpphth. I tried some all-over transparency in Windows for about a day....didn't care for it. When you can see too many windows under your working window, including seeing through what in my mind should be solid 3D objects (toolbars), it gets a bit distracting. It'd be nice IMO to have "real" transparency as long as it can be limited to particular parts of your windows, if desired, as well as retaining the ability to limit what you see below to just the root window (or just certain types of windows)
